The lead-up to ANZAC Day is a time for all Australians to reflect on the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women. This special day holds deep significance for war veterans, those currently serving and their families, and is a poignant reminder of the freedoms we enjoy today in Australia.
One of the most meaningful ways to honour ANZAC Day is by supporting our war veterans. Many veterans face challenges such as physical injuries, mental health issues, and difficulties transitioning to civilian life. As a community, we can show our gratitude and support in various ways:
- Attend ANZAC Day Commemorations: Join local ceremonies such as a Dawn Service, or watch televised events to pay tribute to our veterans and acknowledge their contributions.
- Donate to Veteran Support Organisations: Consider donating to reputable organisations such as Legacy who provide essential support and services like healthcare, rehabilitation, and housing support to veterans.
- Listen and Learn: Take the time to listen to veterans’ stories and learn about their experiences. There are a range of stories available to read on the Federal Government’s Anzac Portal website.
- Bake Anzac Biscuits: To add a touch of tradition to your ANZAC Day observance, consider baking ANZAC biscuits. These classic Australian treats have a rich history and are a symbol of the enduring ANZAC spirit. See below for a simple recipe to try.
ANZAC Biscuit Recipe:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1 cup plain flour
- 1 cup desiccated coconut
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 125g butter
- 2 tablespoons golden syrup
- 1/2 teaspoon bicarb soda
- 1 tablespoon boiling water
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 160°C (320°F) and line baking trays with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, combine oats, flour, coconut, and brown sugar.
- In a saucepan, melt butter and golden syrup over low heat.
- Mix bicarb soda with boiling water, then add to the melted butter mixture. Stir well.
- Pour the butter mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until combined.
- Roll tablespoons of the mixture into balls and place them on the prepared trays, flattening slightly with a fork.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Allow the biscuits to cool on the trays for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Enjoy these delicious ANZAC biscuits as you reflect on the significance of ANZAC Day and honor our war veterans. Lest we forget.
