Navigating aged care can be overwhelming for families. To help you prepare for your ACAT Assessment and understand what to expect, Aged Care Decisions have put together this quick 6-step guide.

What Is an ACAT Assessment?

ACAT, or Aged Care Assessment Team, is a part of My Aged Care, the Australian government body responsible for aged care services. When you apply for subsidised aged care, the ACAT assessment determines which services you qualify for and how much assistance you will receive.

During the assessment, a nurse, social worker, or another government representative will visit your home. They will evaluate your physical and mental health, assess how you manage everyday activities, and ask questions to identify the support you need. This assessment is the first step toward receiving government-funded home care, residential care, or respite services.

How to Apply for an ACAT Assessment

  1. Check Eligibility

Use the eligibility tracker on My Aged Care’s website to confirm whether you’re likely to qualify. Australians 65+ (50+ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander seniors) are eligible to apply.

  • Book Your Assessment

You can schedule your ACAT assessment by calling My Aged Care at 1800 200 422 or apply online on their website. Alternatively, a doctor or social worker can arrange it for you.

The wait time for an assessment is typically 2 to 6 weeks, depending on the demand in your area.

How to Prepare for an ACAT Assessment

Here are 6 key steps to prepare for your ACAT assessment:

  1. Pick a Comfortable Location

The assessment is often conducted in your home, allowing the assessor to observe your daily routine and health needs. Choose a quiet, comfortable spot where you and the assessor can have a focused, relaxed conversation. The interview will likely take 60-90 minutes.

  • Stay Calm

There’s no need to worry. An ACAT assessment isn’t a test or interrogation. Think of it as a friendly chat with someone eager to help you live comfortably as you age.

  • Bring a Support Person

Many people invite a family member or trusted friend to their assessment. A support person can help by asking questions, taking notes, ensuring all key points are discussed, and offering emotional support. They can act as your advocate during the process.

  • Gather Important Documents

Before your assessment, make sure you have the following ready:

  • Medicare card or number
  • Personal ID (e.g., driver’s license, passport, DVA card)
  • Contact details for your GP and healthcare providers
  • Any doctor or specialist referrals
  • A list of medications
  • Records of services you’ve received, like Meals on Wheels
  • Information about the support you currently get from family and friends
  • Prepare a List of Discussion Points and Questions

The assessment is a two-way conversation. Here are some ideas for topics you might like to cover during the interview:

  • Current health concerns (e.g., diabetes, back pain, poor eyesight)
  • Daily activities you struggle with (e.g., vacuuming, shopping)
  • Health and wellbeing goals (e.g., staying social, maintaining mobility)
  • The type of help you need (e.g., household tasks, home modifications)
  • Safety issues in your home (e.g., stairs, trip hazards, overgrown gardens)

You can also ask questions like:

  • What services are available in my area?
  • How long are the waiting times for certain services?
  • What support is available for my current carer?
  • What will my financial contribution be?
  • How can I contact you if I need more information?
  • Be Open About Your Needs

Don’t hesitate to speak candidly about your health and personal situation. The ACAT assessment is an opportunity for you to express your needs and ensure you get the right support to maintain a high quality of life as you get older.

Frequently Asked Questions About ACAT Assessments

What Happens After the Assessment?

After the assessment, it can take 3 to 12 months to find out if you’ve been approved for government-funded aged care services. You’ll receive an Approval Letter if you’re successful. Once your funds are allocated, you will get an Assigned Letter, and then you can begin receiving subsidised care. If you need care before your approval, other options are available. Call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 if you need urgent assistance.

What If I Disagree with the Assessment Outcome?

If you’re dissatisfied with the results of your ACAT assessment, you can contact your assessor or My Aged Care and ask them to review it. You can appeal the decision within 28 days by contacting the Secretary of the Australian Department of Health. If the issue remains unresolved, you can escalate your case to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

  1. I was diagnosed with Herpes four years ago. For over two years, I relied on prescribed medications and treatments, but unfortunately, my condition continued to worsen. The flare-ups became more frequent, the discomfort increased, and even simple daily tasks became difficult to manage.Last year, out of desperation and hope, I decided to try a herbal treatment program from NaturePath Herbal Clinic. Honestly, I was skeptical at first, but within a few months of starting the program, I felt some changes. My discomfort eased, my energy levels improved, and I felt I had more control over my daily life again. It’s been a meaningful experience for me, and I feel more like myself than I have in years.
