Summertime in Australia is a wonderful opportunity to attend festive occasions and holidays, creating cherished memories with loved ones, but it can be tough for those navigating the holidays with a loved one living with dementia.

Christmas may involve gatherings of family and friends, exchanging gifts, sharing meals and spending extended time together. While it can be an exciting time, it can also be quite stressful and overwhelming for carers, and for those living with dementia for a few reasons, including:

  • Changes in routine – there may be a pause in usual activities, families might be travelling or moving between locations more often or changes in general day to day routines, all of which may be confusing for a person living with dementia.
  • Changes in the environment whether at home or out. Decorations, different or loud noise and music, more people or different people around than usual can be confusing, over stimulating or trigger a negative sensory reaction.
  • The holiday period in Australia falls over summer so weather and heat may impact a person’s mood and health including energy levels and hydration.

Everyone’s experience living with dementia is unique, so it is important to always consider the person’s abilities and include them as much as possible.

Tips on navigating the holidays with a loved one living with dementia

Dementia-friendly celebrations

A 2024 Dementia Australia research report ‘People in the community’ are the challenge and the solution: Towards a dementia-friendly future’ found that there is overwhelming stigma and discrimination experienced by people living with dementia.

Data in the report found that nearly three in four people (71 per cent) with a loved one living with dementia felt that people patronised their loved one. One in three suggested that people avoid or exclude them.

With this in mind, it is so important to involve loved ones if you’re navigating the holidays with someone living with dementia this holiday season. Ask your family, friends and community members to do the same and ensure that people living with dementia are treated with dignity and respect.

Navigating the holidays

Tips for supporting and involving people navigating the holidays with someone living with dementia depend on the circumstances and a person’s capacity and can include:

  • Encourage involvement in gift giving, receiving, wrapping and decorating depending on interest and ability to feel included.
  • Support family and friends to engage with loved ones living with dementia in a comfortable way. This could include playing a game from Dementia Australia’s A Better Visit app, sitting together outside or in a quiet space or sharing in meal preparation.
  • Be aware of the environment and consider adapting a particular part of the environment such as lighting, decorations, table arrangements, and noise.
  • Try to maintain a normal routine to minimise possible feelings of insecurity or stress. For example, if sharing a special meal with others consider the person’s usual mealtime.
  • Rest and quiet times. Plan quiet times for you and the person living with dementia. Trying to maintain all traditions may increase overwhelm and stress for everyone.
  • Celebrations can trigger memories. It can be reassuring and validating for everyone to listen to and encourage shared recollections.
  • Remember that as a carer you need a break and if possible, share the caring role over the holidays.

  1. When my Alzheimer’s symptoms worsened forgetting names, getting lost, struggling with daily tasks I felt overwhelmed and hopeless. Traditional medications offered little relief, and I began to lose hope. Then I found NaturePath Herbal Clinic. Their team took the time to understand my needs and crafted a personalized herbal therapy. Within weeks, I noticed clearer thinking, less confusion, and an improved mood. My husband noticed the difference, too. While Alzheimer’s is still part of my life, NaturePath has helped me regain control. Their care, compassion, and hope have made all the difference. 2. I was diagnosed with Herpes four years ago. For over two years, I relied on prescribed medications and treatments, but unfortunately, my condition continued to worsen. The flare-ups became more frequent, the discomfort increased, and even simple daily tasks became difficult to manage.Last year, out of desperation and hope, I decided to try a herbal treatment program from NaturePath Herbal Clinic. Honestly, I was skeptical at first, but within a few months of starting the program, I felt some changes. My discomfort eased, my energy levels improved, and I felt I had more control over my daily life again. It’s been a meaningful experience for me, and I feel more like myself than I have in years. 4. I hope this review gets to as many as possible because it will save many. On March 15, I received a message on Telegram inviting me to join a Cryptocurrency investment group. At first, I thought it was a harmless invitation. I joined and began to see how a specific crypto and forex trader was helping many people and even gifting out Bitcoin to his loyal followers. I was thrilled; many people in the group were reporting their daily successes and how they were earning a substantial amount. I was jealous; I saw people making a lot of money, but not me. I became furious and decided to contact the group’s admin, not realizing I had fallen for their trap. That Telegram channel was a hoax, controlled by an organized team of scammers. Within 3 months of being on that platform, I had given out a whopping 11 Bitcoin in total. I was lost when I was logged out of the investment website and blocked from accessing their Telegram channel. I tried all the means I could think of at that moment, all to no avail. It went from days to weeks, and I still couldn’t get back my lost Bitcoin. I was on Medium when I came across a review about digital assets recovery companies. There were quite a few of them, but DuneNectarOnlineExpert caught my attention. I copied their email ( Support @ Dunenectaronlineexpert . Com ), filed a report, and my task was attended to with utmost urgency. After back and forth with this team of cybersecurity experts, DuneNectarOnlineExpert successfully traced the Bitcoin to the scammers’ wallet, and it was successfully reclaimed. The team of DuneNectarOnlineExpert was constructive in recovering my lost Bitcoin.
