The science-backed benefits of furry friendships and why they’re more than just cute company

A Therapeutic Tail That’s Been Wagging for Decades

Pet therapy isn’t new, but it’s gaining real traction in the aged care space. The practice began gaining attention in the 1960s when researchers noticed profound psychological and physiological changes in people who regularly interacted with animals. Today, aged care homes, hospitals, and even hospice facilities are embracing furry visitors as part of their wellness programs.

The Science Behind Why Pet Therapy Works

Pet therapy offers both mental and physical health benefits, and the science supports it. Here’s how:

– Reduces stress and anxiety – Simply petting an animal can lower
cortisol (the stress hormone) and increase oxytocin (the love hormone)

– Boosts mood and motivation – Especially powerful for people with depression or dementia.

– Encourages movement and social interaction – A therapy dog can get residents out of their rooms and into group spaces, sparking conversation and mobility.

“My Labrador, Max, motivates me to walk daily. The exercise keeps me active, and Max’s loyalty eases my loneliness significantly. – Lynette, 74

Three Key Health Benefits of Pet Therapy

1. Healthy Blood Pressure
Pet therapy helps lower blood pressure, reducing the risk of stroke and heart disease. This is crucial for seniors, as high blood pressure tends to have more severe consequences as we age.

2. Improved Heart Health
According to the Heart Foundation, just 30 minutes of daily physical activity can significantly reduce your risk of heart disease. Taking a walk with a therapy dog, or even just playing fetch can help reach those goals in a fun and meaningful way.

3. Better Mobility, Balance and Strength
Moving around to greet an animal, bending down to pat it, or going for a walk helps with mobility and balance – two key factors in fall prevention and independence. Regular movement, especially when it doesn’t feel like “exercise” is critical for ageing well.

“After losing my wife, I adopted a rescue cat named Boots. His quiet presence gives me comfort, routine, and daily companionship. – Geoff, 71

Don’t Want to Own a Pet? You Don’t Have To

While owning a pet offers benefits, it’s not always practical for older adults. Allergies, costs, or living arrangements can make it hard. Pet therapy solves this by providing animal interaction without the responsibilities.
Many aged care homes and community organisations offer volunteer-run animal visitation programs. Some animal shelters also provide mobile pet therapy visits through specially trained teams.

Owning a Pet Has Its Perks, Too

If a senior is able and interested in owning a pet, the benefits can be long-term and life-changing. Pet owners often experience:

– Lower cholesterol and blood pressure
– Better sleep and energy levels
– Reduced feelings of isolation
– Faster recovery after illness or surgery
– A stronger daily routine

But there are considerations: pets need regular care, and the risk of falls or allergies should be taken into account. Companion animals like older dogs or cats, or even birds, may be more suitable than high-energy puppies or kittens.

How to Access Pet Therapy in Australia

If you’re a senior or carer interested in pet therapy, speak with your doctor or aged care provider. Some government-funded Home Care Packages and NDIS plans may cover animal-assisted therapy as part of a broader well-being strategy.

You can also reach out to:
– Local councils and aged care centres
– Pet therapy organisations like Delta Society Australia or Therapy Dogs Australia
RSPCA community programs
– Animal rescue groups offering outreach visits

The Final Woof

Whether it’s a dog curled up at your feet or a cat gently purring in your lap, the emotional and physical health benefits of pet therapy are undeniable. For older Australians, it’s more than a cute moment, it’s a vital tool for holistic well-being – healing hearts and bodies one paw at a time.

  1. Hello, what a wonderful article. It bought tears to my eyes..
We had to have our 18 year old dog euthanised last year and still miss him so very much ,he was a beautiful Maltese cross rescue dog.
Unfortunately I have had great trouble trying to adopt another rescue dog. We meet all the requirements, however my many applications are not successful. We are trying to get a small dog. We have a lovely backyard and garden all fenced and safe. We are home most of the time so the dog would not feel lonely. It would be well loved and secure. A house does not seem the same without a dog to bring happiness and fun.Maybe we are regarded as too old.As I included on the applications we are retired. I can understand the reasoning behind adopting a young dog, So i have tried to adopt more senior ones. .Just another frustration of being old.
So now you understand why I enjoyed the article so much. From a carer..

    1. Hello Elaine

We are kindred spirits in our love for our little dogs. I lost both my Cavoodle and Bichon Frise dogs last December. The Cavoodle had diabetes and the little Bichon fretted after losing his long-time mate. He died of liver failure. I put an ad on Gumtree to see if a little dog needed rehoming and a miracle happened. Little Honey came into our lives from a dog breeder who no longer needed her. Honey is a combination of our two little dogs and is our greatest joy. Try Gumtree and see if the doggie gods are still smiling down on those of us who adore our pets.
